Meta retired Flexible ads: what replaced them and how to run several creatives in one ad

Meta removed the Flexible format from Ad setup in March 2026. Multi-media ads now take up to 10 images and videos in one ad; here is where every control went.

The short answer

Yes, the Flexible ad format is gone from Ad setup. Meta’s help page on the flexible format breakdown says: “Starting in March 2026, the flexible format will no longer be available in Ad setup.”[1] The format let you put up to 10 images and videos in one ad and have Meta decide whether each person saw a single image, a video or a carousel.[2]

What replaced it in Ads Manager is the multi-media ad: a single image or video ad into which “you can upload up to 10 images and videos”, each with its own text, destination URL and placements.[3] Flexible media, the toggle most guides name as the replacement, is a different setting that lets one asset run in more placements; Meta’s page says it “is different from the flexible ad format.”[5] Third parties date the move to March 2026 and an API successor to May 2026; Meta’s pages carry the first date, and we could not find the second.[14]

  • Meta’s help page states that starting in March 2026 the flexible format is no longer available in Ad setup.
  • The replacement in Ads Manager is the multi-media ad: up to 10 images and videos in one single image or video ad, each asset with its own text, destination URL and placements.
  • Flexible media is a separate toggle that lets one image or video run in more placements; Meta’s page says it is different from the flexible ad format.
  • Multi-media ads do not work with carousel, collection, existing posts, Advantage+ catalog ads or reservation buying, and cannot be added to an active or paused campaign.
  • Any change to ad creative, or adding a new ad to an ad set, is a significant edit that restarts the learning phase, so load every variant when the ad is created.

What changed, and when?

Three things moved in the first half of 2026. The flexible format left Ad setup in March 2026, in Meta’s own words on the flexible format breakdown page.[1] Collection left Ad setup at the same time and is now chosen “in Ad creative, under Format display options.”[7] In January 2026 the Instagram Explore placement stopped being selectable; tapping a tile in the Explore grid now opens “a new immersive Reels viewer instead of the Explore Feed.” Explore home, the grid itself, remains.[10]

The objective consolidation is older than some round-ups say. Meta states the six simplified objectives were introduced in 2022, with the original 11 locked from January 2024.[9][8] Ryze AI files the 11-to-6 change under 2026; the count is right, the year is not.[16]

The timeline as of October 7, 2026, and whether Meta’s own page carries the date.

Where do the controls live now?

In the single image or video format, inside a creative wizard that takes up to ten assets. Meta calls it “the new creative workflow in Meta Ads Manager”; the menu names below are from its walkthrough.[3][4]

  1. 1

    Pick the plain format

Click + Create, choose an objective, and continue to Ad setup. Select Manual upload and Single image or video. Carousel, collection and active or paused campaigns are not supported.[3][4]
  2. 2

    Open the wizard

In Ad setup, click Set up creative, then Image or Video; both kinds can be added next.[4]
  3. 3

    Add up to ten assets

In Media, use the Images and Videos tabs. The same picture in several ratios is grouped, and “grouped variants don’t count towards the creative limit, which is currently ten creatives per ad, with ten variants allowed per creative.”[4]
  4. 4

    Crop, write, set enhancements

Hover a thumbnail and click Crop, complete Text, then on Enhancements set Advantage+ creative; any enhancement “will apply to all media.” The Flex media toggle is here, or on Crop for awareness.[4][5]
  5. 5

    Customize each asset

At the ad level, in Ad creative, click Edit, then Customise media. Each asset gets its own crop, text, landing page and placement exclusions.[3][4]
  6. 6

    Allow or refuse layouts

Still in Ad creative, Format display options is where collection now lives and where you decide whether Meta may rebuild your assets as a carousel or collection.[6][7]

For the old one-asset flow, hover the Media tooltip in Creative setup and click Return to original single media experience.[4]

What are the limits on assets, objectives and placements?

Ten assets, six objectives with exceptions by conversion location, and every selected placement unless you exclude one. Meta’s page allows “a mix of different asset types”, “assets in different aspect ratios” and “different creative variations in the same ratio.”[3]

10
Images and videos in one multi-media ad[3]
10 × 10
Creatives per ad, and aspect-ratio variants per creative[4]
6
Objectives supported, each with conversion-location exceptions[3]

The exceptions: traffic, not Instagram or Facebook; engagement, not Facebook Page; leads, not website and instant forms or website and calls; sales, not website and in-store or website and calls; awareness and app promotion, all locations.[3] Unsupported outright are reservation buying, active or paused campaigns, Advantage+ catalog ads, and the carousel, collection and existing-post formats.[3]

On placements, “by default, all uploaded media assets are eligible to show across all of your selected placements”; you take an asset out of a placement rather than assigning it to one.[3] Flexible media works only with the single image or video format, across all six objectives.[5] Format display options for a single media ad are offered for traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales; for a carousel, for every objective.[6]

What is the API side, in plain words?

The old format is still documented and the new one, as far as we can find, is not. Meta’s developer page Get started with Flexible Format is live as of October 7, 2026. It describes a field called creative_asset_groups_spec: you send groups of images, videos, texts and a call to action, “without needing to select a specific format.” Only OUTCOME_SALES and OUTCOME_APP_PROMOTION campaigns support it, each group needs an image or video, and every call to action in a group must be the same type.[11]

Adsuploader reports that in May 2026 Meta “documented a new Marketing API construct called Multi-Media Ads” with “per-asset customization of text, destination URLs, placements, and cropping.”[14] That matches the Ads Manager workflow, where each asset can carry its own text and “a different landing page.”[3] But no developer page by that name turned up on the check date, and Meta’s help pages call multi-media ads “features in a new creative workflow in Meta Ads Manager.”[3] A tool that still writes creative_asset_groups_spec is building the old format, which keeps its own reporting breakdown.[1]

How do you run four to ten variants of one message without splitting the learning phase?

Put them in one ad, at creation, and leave it alone. Meta’s list of edits that send an ad set back into learning includes “any change to ad creative” and “adding a new ad to your ad set.”[12] A multi-media ad with four to ten assets gives the delivery system its variety on day one, so there is no later edit to reset the clock, and results accrue to one ad instead of being split across four.[3][12]

The variants should be executions of one message, not four messages. Meta’s own upload list says it: the same picture in several ratios, and “different creative variations in the same ratio.”[3] Four layouts of one headline, each exported at 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16, is twelve files that Meta groups into four creatives. Keep one destination URL unless a version has a reason to go elsewhere.

How long to wait is its own question: how long to run Facebook ads before judging covers the learning phase, and how many ad creatives to test covers the count. This is the shape Showfolk builds for: the AI ad generator makes four versions of one ad in your brand’s fonts and colors, exported at every Meta size, so the set loads into one multi-media ad and Meta picks the version each person responds to.

What should you check in Ads Manager before you rely on it?

Five things, because the rollout is uneven: Social Media Today, reporting Meta’s June 2026 guidance, noted that multi-media ads “are available in selected regions via the creative workflow in Meta Ads Manager.”[13]

The objective, new-campaign and toggle rows come from Meta’s pages.[3][5] The reporting row is Adsuploader’s observation, as is this: existing Flexible ads “keep delivering, but you cannot edit one to add the new controls, so you have to duplicate and rebuild it.”[14] Their old breakdown, Breakdown, then Flexible format under Creative, is still described on Meta’s page.[1]

Questions people ask

Did Meta remove Flexible ads?
Yes, from Ad setup. Meta’s help page says that starting in March 2026 the flexible format is no longer available in Ad setup. The format allowed up to 10 images and videos in one ad and let Meta choose single image, video or carousel for each person. Its developer page for the Marketing API is still live.
What replaced Flexible ads in Meta Ads Manager?
Multi-media ads, inside the single image or video format. Meta’s help page says you can upload up to 10 images and videos into one ad, give each asset its own text and destination URL, and exclude it from placements. Format display options, in the Ad creative section, decide whether Meta may also show your assets as a carousel or collection.
Is flexible media the same as the Flexible ad format?
No. Meta’s page on flexible media says it is different from the flexible ad format. Flexible media lets one image or video be delivered to more placements and is a toggle inside Advantage+ creative. The flexible ad format looked at several assets and chose the format. Many 2026 guides use the two names interchangeably.
How many images can one Facebook ad have in 2026?
Up to 10 images and videos in a multi-media ad, in any mix and in different aspect ratios. The same picture in several ratios is grouped as variants of one creative, and the limit is ten creatives per ad with ten variants each. A carousel is a separate format with its own card limits.
Do my existing Flexible ads still run?
Meta’s pages do not say they stop, and the Flexible format breakdown for reporting is still documented. Adsuploader reports that existing Flexible ads keep delivering but cannot be edited to gain the new per-asset controls, so you duplicate and rebuild in the new workflow. Treat that as a third-party observation until Meta states it.
