Meta ads changes in 2026: what moved, what was retired, what replaced it

A dated changelog of Meta ads in 2026: Instagram Explore placement retired, Flexible ads out of Ad setup, Advantage+ shopping campaigns closed, API v26.0 removals.

The short answer

The Meta ads changes of 2026 are a series of removals rather than one redesign. The Instagram Explore placement left Ads Manager in January 2026,[1] the old Advantage+ shopping and app campaign types could no longer be created from May 19, 2026,[4] the Flexible ad format left Ad setup in March,[9] and Marketing API v26.0 removed the Explore Feed, Messenger Stories and poll ads from the API on July 29, 2026, with the last of those reaching every API version on October 27.[5][6]

What replaced them: Advantage+ campaign setup for sales, app promotion and leads,[8] multi-media ads in place of Flexible, and Instagram Reels delivery in place of Explore.[1] One widely repeated “2026 change” is not one: the consolidation of 11 objectives into 6 happened in 2022.[2]

  • Meta’s help page says that starting in January 2026 Instagram Explore is no longer available as a placement in Ads Manager, and that ads targeting Instagram Reels now show where the Explore feed was.
  • From May 19, 2026, creating, duplicating or updating Advantage+ shopping campaigns and Advantage+ app campaigns is no longer allowed on any Marketing API version.
  • Marketing API v26.0 removed the Instagram Explore Feed placement on July 29, 2026; Messenger Stories and poll ad removals extend to all API versions on October 27, 2026.
  • Meta’s help pages say the six simplified objectives were introduced in 2022 and the original 11 were discontinued in 2024; the consolidation is not a 2026 change.
  • From April 2026 the qualified leads performance goal is unavailable for new campaigns without a Conversions API integration, and existing campaigns are affected from August 2026.

The 2026 changes in one table

Every row has a date from a Meta page, except the Flexible format row, whose month comes from a dated third-party report because Meta’s own page no longer states it.

Meta ads changes in 2026, with the date each took effect, the Meta page that states it, and what to do.

Which placements were retired?

Instagram Explore is the one most advertisers noticed. Meta’s help page on ads in Explore carries the note: “Starting in January 2026, Instagram Explore will no longer be available as a placement in Ads Manager. When people tap on tiles in the Explore grid, they’ll be taken to a new immersive Reels viewer instead of the Explore feed.”[1] The same note says ads targeting the Instagram Reels placement now show in what was the Explore feed, that ad sets targeting Explore deliver to their other placements, and that Instagram Explore home, the grid itself, can still be selected.[1]

The API followed in July. Meta’s developer post announcing v26.0 says: “Beginning with Marketing API v26.0 on July 29, 2026, the Instagram Explore Feed placement will no longer be available.”[6] The v26.0 changelog adds two more: the story value in messenger_positions is removed for v26.0 calls, and “Poll components are no longer supported when creating or updating ads and creatives.”[5] Of the Messenger Stories change Meta says: “This API-only change does not affect Ads Manager.”[6] Both reach all Marketing API versions on October 27, 2026.[5]

If you run Advantage+ placements, none of this needs a change from you. If you pick placements by hand, or a tool does it through the API, check that Explore and Messenger Stories are no longer in the list.

What changed in Advantage+ campaigns?

The separate campaign types were folded into a setup. Meta’s help page says: “If you choose the sales, app promotion or leads objective, you’ll see the Advantage+ setup which helps you reach your campaign goals by applying AI across your campaign,” and adds that “Manual campaign features are all still available.”[8] Its lead ad page describes what that looks like: “You’ll see a notification about how you no longer need to choose a campaign setup as you’re starting with Advantage+ leads campaign.”[10] The page names only those three objectives.[8]

The 2026 part is the shutdown of the old types. The v25.0 changelog of February 18, 2026 says: “Creation, duplication, and updates to Advantage+ shopping campaigns and Advantage+ app campaigns is no longer allowed,” on v25.0 and later at release and on all versions from May 19, 2026, and tells advertisers to migrate existing campaigns to the Advantage+ campaign structure.[4] In Ads Manager that means the sales or app promotion objective with Advantage+ on.

Advantage+ creative enhancements are a separate list, and some are on by default for every new ad. Which ones change your image or text, and how to switch each off, is in our post on Advantage+ creative enhancements.

Were campaign objectives consolidated in 2026?

No. Several 2026 guides list “11 objectives consolidated into 6” as a this-year change, but Meta’s own pages date it. The help page on transitioning to simplified objectives opens: “In 2022, 6 simplified ad objectives were introduced in Meta Ads Manager to help advertisers achieve the best campaign setup based on a business goal.”[2] It then says that in 2024 the 11 original objectives would be discontinued, with duplicating and importing on the original objectives ending in January 2024.[2] The mapping page confirms the six current objectives, awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales, and says all the same functionality is available as optimization settings or conversion locations inside them.[12]

What did move in 2026 is what sits under an objective. Meta’s lead ad page says: “Beginning April 2026, the qualified leads performance goal is no longer available for new campaign creation without Conversions API integration. Existing campaigns will be impacted beginning August 2026.”[10]

What moved in ad formats and ad labels?

The Flexible format, which let one ad hold up to 10 images and videos, left Ad setup. Meta’s help pages for it now open with: “If you no longer have access to the flexible format in Ad setup, learn more about multi-media ads and customizing your ad creative.”[9] The page no longer states the month; a third-party guide updated July 17, 2026 dates the removal to March 2026, and our post on the replacement covers where each control went. Collection moved the same way: Meta’s catalog ad page says the format “may no longer appear for you in Ad setup” but can be selected in Ad creative under Format display options, with no date.[7]

The footer URL is the quiet one. The same page says: “Starting in March 2026, all single media and Advantage+ catalog collection ads on Facebook Feed will no longer display a URL in the ad footer.”[7] If people learned your domain from that line, the headline or image now has to carry it. Showfolk places the headline and logo as real text layers in your brand’s fonts, inside Meta’s safe zone, so a domain or offer in the headline is never redrawn by the image model; how the AI ad generator does it.

The label change is undated. Several help pages carry the note: “Ads that were previously marked with a ‘Sponsored’ label will now display an ‘Ad’ label instead.”[1] No Meta page we found gives the date, so it is not in the table.

What should a small advertiser check now?

  1. 1

Open any ad set with a warning banner

Campaigns using retired interest options stopped delivering on January 15, 2026 unless the options were replaced.[3]
  2. 2

    Look at saved placement lists

Explore left Ads Manager in January and the API in July; Messenger Stories left API ad sets in July.[1][6] Advantage+ placements needs nothing; a hand-picked list does.
  3. 3

Check the campaign type of anything a tool created

Old Advantage+ shopping and app campaigns cannot be created, duplicated or updated through the API since May 19, 2026.[4]
  4. 4

Decide on the qualified leads goal

Without a Conversions API connection it is gone for new campaigns since April 2026 and for existing ones from August.[10]
  5. 5

Put the domain back in the creative

Facebook Feed single media and catalog collection ads lost the footer URL in March 2026.[7]
  6. 6

    Diary October 27, 2026

The v26.0 removals reach every Marketing API version that day,[5] when an old reporting or buying integration may go quiet.

Questions people ask

Is the Instagram Explore placement gone in 2026?
Yes. Meta’s help page says that starting in January 2026 Instagram Explore is no longer available as a placement in Ads Manager, because tapping a tile in Explore now opens a Reels viewer. Instagram Explore home, the grid, can still be selected. Marketing API v26.0 removed the Explore Feed placement from the API on July 29, 2026.
Did Meta consolidate campaign objectives in 2026?
No. Meta’s help page says the six simplified objectives were introduced in 2022, and that the 11 original objectives were discontinued in 2024. Guides that date the change to 2026 are mistaken.
What happened to Advantage+ shopping campaigns?
They were folded into the Advantage+ campaign setup that appears when you choose the sales, app promotion or leads objective. From Marketing API v25.0 on February 18, 2026, and on all versions from May 19, 2026, the old Advantage+ shopping and app campaign types can no longer be created, duplicated or updated; Meta says to migrate them to the Advantage+ campaign structure.
What replaced Flexible ads in Meta Ads Manager?
Multi-media ads and the Format display options control in Ad creative. Meta’s Flexible format pages now point advertisers who no longer see Flexible in Ad setup to multi-media ads, which take up to 10 images and videos in one ad. A third-party guide dates the removal to March 2026; Meta’s page no longer states the month.
What did Marketing API v26.0 change for advertisers?
Released July 29, 2026, it removed the Instagram Explore Feed placement, dropped Messenger Stories from ad sets created through the API (Ads Manager is not affected), blocked new poll ad creatives, and removed three delivery-estimate fields. The Messenger Stories, poll and delivery-estimate changes apply to all Marketing API versions on October 27, 2026.
Do I have to label AI-generated images in Facebook ads in 2026?
Only for ads about social issues, elections or politics, where Meta requires disclosure of photorealistic AI media and, from June 1, 2026, also uses automated detection. Ordinary business ads have no disclosure duty, though Meta labels media made with its own AI tools automatically.
